Kids’ summer mocktail

There’s something magical about turning an adventure into a drink. This mocktail is perfect after a woodland walk, when little hands come home full of freshly picked blackberries. It’s simple, colourful, and refreshing, and it feels like a treat without relying on squash or fizzy drinks.

Pre-Drink Activity

Head out for a walk and collect blackberries together. Not only is it fun and seasonal, it also connects kids with where their food comes from. When you get home, wash the berries and get them involved in the next step: making their very own mocktail.

Ingredients

  • A handful of fresh mint leaves (lightly crushed)

  • 2–3 lemon slices

  • A small handful of fresh blackberries (lightly crushed)

  • Cold still or sparkling water

  • Edible flowers (like pansies or violas) for garnish

Method

  1. Lightly crush the mint leaves in a jug or glass to release their flavour.

  2. Add lemon slices and gently press with a spoon to bring out the juice.

  3. Crush the blackberries slightly and stir them through for colour.

  4. Top up with cold still or sparkling water.

  5. Finish with a few edible flowers for a fun, fancy touch.

Nutrition note

Blackberries are rich in vitamin C, fibre, and antioxidants, a brilliant boost after outdoor play. Mint adds a refreshing flavour and can support digestion. With water at the base, this drink stays light, hydrating, and tooth-friendly.

Variations

  • Kiwi & lime: Swap blackberries and lemon for slices of fresh kiwi and lime for a zingier, tropical twist.

  • Frozen fun: Freeze blackberries into ice cubes before your walk — drop them in when you get back for an instant cool-down.

  • Still or sparkling: Use whichever your kids prefer; sparkling makes it feel extra special.

Grown-up twist

This mocktail is designed for kids and families, but if adults fancy joining in, it also makes a brilliant base for a light summer cocktail. Simply add:

  • Gin for a refreshing, botanical kick (pairs beautifully with mint and lemon).

  • White rum to create a fruity mojito-style drink.

  • Vodka for a clean, simple version that lets the blackberry shine.

  • Prosecco or sparkling wine instead of water for a celebratory spritz.

👉 Use around 25–50ml per glass, topped up with sparkling water or fizz. It’s an easy way to share the same drink, with just a little twist for the adults.
